The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation has promised to hold a public forum with communities living along the railway line before building begins on an elevated expressway connecting Phnom Penh’s city centre to the airport, but only after a construction company has been selected.

More than 100 people from eight communities gathered yesterday in front of the ministry demanding more information on the toll way, which is expected to be built near the railway line.

Lim Sidenin, secretary of state for Ministry of Public Works, said a decision still needs to be made on a construction company, with Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation and Henan Provincial Communications Planning Survey and Design Institute currently in the running.

“When we get the result, we will report to the people in eight communities immediately, since the selected company will report to the ministry about its strategies to tackle affected people and compensation,” he said.

Ny Sandos a representative of the communities, called on the government to select a company that respects the rights of people living along the railway line and to make sure people can offer input before construction begins.
