A gas station in Kampong Cham province’s Batheay district partially burned down on Monday evening after a tanker truck delivering gasoline accidentally hit a utility pole, sparking the fire.
Deputy district police chief Chum Ratana said the truck was trying to back into the station.
“It happened at 5:30pm. The fire started when the tanker was attempting to deliver gas. But when it reversed into the station, it accidentally hit the utility pole, causing the fire,” he said.
“No one was injured. The roof of the station was 50 percent burned down and the gas tank of the truck was 50 percent burned down. We don’t know the cost of the fire because the owner hasn’t told us.”
The police chief of Phaav commune, who gave his name only as Rith, said the gas station owner lost thousands of dollars in cash in the blaze. Damage to the building has yet to be estimated, he added.
“When we asked the owner, they said they lost about $35,000 in cash in the fire, not including the cost of the damaged building. The tanker truck does not belong to them, it belongs to the company supplying gasoline,” he said.
“It took about half an hour to put the fire out, using seven fire trucks.”
