Two wildlife poachers were caught red-handed yesterday with protected birds by WWF officers patrolling with community members and Mondulkiri provincial environment department officials in Sre Pork wildlife sanctuary.
“We were patrolling as usual in the wildlife sanctuary and caught them with 30 white-rumped shamas, one motorbike, two speakers and two small traps,” WWF official Chin Say said.
“After arresting the two of them, we sent them to the preservation office in the local commune which later forwarded them to be questioned at the provincial department of environment,” he said, adding that they were from the same commune.
Keo Sopheak, director of the provincial environment department, said that when questioned the poachers said they trapped the birds for sale.
The two, who were not named, were sent to the provincial court.
