The recently constructed Kratie University, which was mostly funded by the Chinese government, was handed over to the Education Ministry yesterday.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Finance Minister Aun Pornmoniroth said the university was the embodiment of the cooperation between the two countries.
“The development of Cambodia in part is due to the huge support from the Chinese government as well as its people, who have helped our politics and economy,” he said.
Chinese ambassador to Cambodia Xiong Bo said that the university will help Cambodia further enhance its workforce and help national development.
“The Chinese government will continue to cooperate with Cambodia in significant sectors and will help push for rapid development in Cambodia as well as welfare for the Cambodian people,” he said.
The university cost $12 million, $10 million of which was a grant from China while the remaining $2 million came from the Kratie Foundation for Higher Education Organization led by Deputy Prime Minister Keat Chhon in 2015.
The university was built on a 99 hectare plot of land in Kratie city. The campus includes meeting halls, a laboratory as well as a canteen.
