The Environment Ministry plans to plant 500,000 trees in protected areas across the country this year, to boost forest cover and improve the livelihoods of communities.

The trees will include luxury specimens, such as rosewood, and fruit trees.

The plan was unveiled as civil society groups and locals launched a project to grow 2,000 luxury trees in Kampong Thom province yesterday, in celebration of National Arbor Day.

The ministry said in May and June alone more than 16,000 trees were planted in many protected communities across the country.

Those include conservation areas in Mondulkiri, Prey Veng, Kep, Siem Reap, Tbong Khmom, Preah Vihear, Kampong Thom, Pursat and Kampong Chhnang provinces.

It said the reforestation will contribute to the protection of community forests, promote the resilience of rural communities in adapting to climate change and enhance the living standards of local people.

The event yesterday in Kampong Thom saw more than 100 civil society organisations, land activists and community members come together in Prey Lang forest’s Kbal Kla community.

The Peace Bridge Organisation and Kbal Kla Community Forest Commission of Prey Lang said 130 volunteers would be involved with planting the 2,000 trees there.

The groups also called on companies involved in forestry businesses to acknowledge the serious effects of deforestation and prevent any business activity that leads to further loss of forest.
