Flooding has spread in coastal provinces and one man was killed by lightning as a low pressure weather system moves into the country from the South China Sea.

Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology Lim Kean Hor warned of the coming floods on Wednesday, urging local authorities to prepare as storm were expected until Sunday

The Preah Sihanouk provincial hall issued an announcement yesterday to inform all citizens, students, businessmen and local and international tourists to be careful during the storms.

“The weather situation in these few days caused some disasters such as trees falling down, affecting houses,” it said.

Lightning killed a fisherman and the floods affected villages in Prey Nob and Kampong Seila districts, it said.

It said that the provincial governor and water resources department officials visited the areas affected by floods, preparing forces to help citizens.

National Committee for Disaster Management spokesman Keo Vy said yesterday that almost all provinces were affected by heavy rain, but floods had hit the coastal provinces already.

Mr Vy added that the heavy rain will affect Phnom Penh  and Prey Veng and Kandal provinces next.

Preah Sihanouk provincial police chief Choun Narin said yesterday that police visited villagers to warn them that the storms might continue until Sunday.

“I sent more than 20 officers and health officials to help the villagers where their houses are flooded,” he said.
