At least 70 people died and more than 100 people were injured due to natural disasters in the first nine months of this year.

Nhim Vanda, vice president of the National Committee for Disaster Management, said yesterday there were 159 natural disasters during the timeframe, in which at least six people were killed when houses or trees fell on them.

Another 70 people were killed by lightning strikes, he added, noting strikes also injured 62 people and killed 59 cattle.

Mr Vanda said that at least 4,030 homes were damaged due to the disasters, along with 65 schools.

“The relevant ministries and institutions have taken action responding to these issues, and we have asked sub-national officials to help,” he said.

Over the past two weeks, a low pressure system brought strong winds and heavy rain to most parts of the country, leading to floods in the capital.

The water levels in some reservoirs, valleys, streams and rivers have also risen dramatically, according to the Ministry of Water Resources.

Minister of Water Resources Lim Kean Hor said the current weather system is expected to continue bringing heavy rains until Tuesday.

“Relevant ministries, institutions, local authorities and citizens must pay attention to the situation of floods from rainfall, which may occur in lowland areas and any areas next to waterways,” he said.
