Construction crews will break ground this weekend on a new walkway overpass alongside Olympic Stadium as part of the Olympia City development project. The Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC) and a municipal crew will begin work on the walkway, which will be at a five-way intersection where Charles de Gaulle Boulevard and Oknha Tep Phan Street meet.

“We hope that the walking overpass . . . will help to boost the beauty of Phnom Penh, ease walking, and contribute to the reduction of traffic congestion and accidents,” said Met Measpheakdey, Phnom Penh Municipal Hall spokesman.

He added that the overpass will be complete before Khmer New Year next April. However, Meng Chamroeun, head of the Olympia City project, said the overpass will take a year to complete. “It cannot be finished in six months. This project is huge, and plus, the construction process will affect road users, shop vendors, and some house owners,” Chamroeun said.

He added that the $3 million price tag will be covered entirely by the OCIC, as it is part of the Olympia City project. The project spans 11 hectares and, when finished, is expected to feature high-rise apartments, office space and shopping areas.
