The Ministry of Land Management yesterday said 50 percent of families involved in land disputes with sugarcane plantations in Preah Vihear province have had their cases resolved.

Meanwhile, others battling sugarcane companies in Koh Kong province have asked the ministry to speed up settlements for them.Minister Chea Sophara said on his Facebook page that 23 of 56 families have received solutions in Preah Vihear so far.

“The settlement for the people will be worked on continuously,” he added.

The ministry said earlier this month that it is working on resolving cases for 500 families locked in disputes with sugarcane companies that had been granted economic land concessions in Preah Vihear, Kampong Speu and Koh Kong provinces.

Vorn Nha, a villager whose case was resolved in Preah Vihear province’s Chhaeb district, said he was glad to be rid of the long-running battle.

Phav Nherng, a citizen representative in Koh Kong province, said villagers there were still awaiting results from the ministry after completing paper work weeks ago.

“We will continue to demand solutions because we want the people to receive the same compensation,” she said. “We want the ministry to speed up resolution; we want them to solve the problems before the 2018 national election.”
