Twenty-two NGOs released a joint statement yesterday demanding the release of two activists detained by Koh Kong Provincial Court after recording a video of sand dredging.

The NGOs, including the Affiliated Network for Social Accountability, Human Rights Cambodia, Adhoc and Licadho, are seeking freedom for Dearm Kundy, 22, and Hun Vanak, 36.

The pair were held after recording alleged irregular activity of a boat they said belongs to the LYP Group.

They were charged in September with incitement to commit a felony and violation of privacy.

“They face many difficulties such as crowded cells, poor prison hygiene, and a shortage of water, food and health care,” the statement said. “They say they are in a four-metre square room with 20 other people.”

No trial date had been set. The statement urged the court to drop the charges because they were fundamentally unclear.

Last month the court denied their request for bail.
