The trees will be planted to beautify the city and tackle vehicle emissions.

City Hall plans to plant trees on about 100 hectares of land in major areas of the capital to reduce air pollution caused by vehicle exhaust.

City Hall spokesman Met Meas Pheakdey said yesterday that Boeung Tamok Lake in the north of Phnom Penh would see many trees planted in order to stabilize the environment.

“This work of tree planting will serve two purposes,” he said. “First, we see so many tall buildings going up and want to help beautify the city, and secondly, the environment can be improved by having trees to battle emissions from vehicles.”

He said national roads that enter the city would also have trees planted along their routes, as well as in Chamkarmon, Daun Penh, Toul Kork and 7 Makara districts.

“We are continuing to conduct research to ensure the correct trees are planted,” he added. “We do not want leaves clogging drainage systems, or trees growing too big into electrical wires.”

Von Choy Soneath, a programme coordinator with Cambodia Green Will, said that if City Hall followed through with the plan, it would help improve the city’s livability.

“This plan demonstrates to the people that the authorities have paid attention to the environment, and it encourages and sets a good example for youth to follow,” she said.
