The Minister of Public Works and Transportation announced yesterday that the railway line connecting Phnom Penh to the airport is 50 percent complete.

Sun Chanthol said the project from the Phnom Penh train station to the airport is half finished and added that trains are on the way to the kingdom from Mexico.

He said the trains are expected to arrive in March via the port in Preah Sihanouk province.

“We are proud that the government has achieved its goal to build this rail line to the airport, which will serve residents well,” he said.

The ministry is hoping to have the service up and running before Khmer New Year in mid-April.

The new train will use three train engines imported from Mexico for passenger transport, with each train able to carry 100 passengers.

The project is being undertaken by the Royal Group.

In December, Mr Chanthol said the new train service would be free for everyone during the first three months.

He added yesterday that the ministry plans to paint the railway boundary with yellow markers, and the adjacent roadway with blue ones, to ensure motorists are aware of the lines and to reduce the chance of accidents.

“We will paint the railway and road to make it easy to see,” he said. “This will help avoid traffic accidents.”

Recently, the government announced that it would also build a new airport in Kandal province to accommodate larger, long-haul aircrafts.
