The government yesterday said that it donated $100,000 in humanitarian aid to Laos as a relief package for thousands of victims affected by a collapsed dam that left dozens dead, hundreds missing and thousands displaced.

Ouch Borith, a secretary of state with the Foreign Affairs Ministry, said yesterday that the funds were received by Lao Ambassador Prasith Sayasith at the ministry’s office. “This donation is meant as humanitarian aid for the victims of the collapse of Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy hydroelectric project last week,” Mr Borith said in a statement.

Last week, Prime Minister Hun Sen sent a letter to Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith expressing his condolences.

Mr Hun Sen said in the letter that he regretted the loss of life caused by the collapsed dam.

“On behalf of the government and the people of Cambodia, allow me to convey my deepest sympathy and profound condolences,” Mr Hun Sen said in the letter.

According to Thailand’s PBS News on Monday, Laos has accumulated about $960,000 in donations.

It said that the donations were meant for the victims of the dam disaster in Laos’ Attapeu and Champassak province.

It added that apart from cash donations, people could also donate clothes, food and medicines.
