In a statement yesterday the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology said that Mekong river water levels in Stung Treng and Kratie provinces have increased, while water levels in Kampong Cham have begun to recede after authorities deployed water pumps.

The ministry said water levels in Stung Treng and Kratie provinces have increased to 10.60 metres and to 21.62 metres respectively, while in Kampong Cham province, water levels have receded to 15.06 metres.

“Water levels of the Mekong river on Sunday increased by a little in Stung Treng and Kratie, but in Kampong Cham, the water levels have decreased,” the statement said.

Kampong Cham provincial officials managed to deploy two water pumps in the provincial city, it added.

Om Vibol, director of the provincial water resources department, said yesterday that the pumps served as a measure to prevent water levels from exceeding the safe threshold.

Mr Vibol noted that the machines are capable of pumping 2,200-metres of water per hour.

“The authorities began pumping water to avoid floods,” he said. “We’ll continue until water levels have fully receded.”

On Friday, the Cambodian Red Cross provided food and provisions to flood victims in Kampong Cham’s Kampong Siem district where 1,548 families were displaced.

According to a National Committee for Disaster Management report, the Mekong river has flooded across surrounding provinces, leading to five deaths and leaving thousands displaced.

It said that more than 3,000 families were evacuated to safer grounds in order to avoid floods that inundated communal buildings, including schools, temples and hospitals.

In Phnom Penh, Chbar Ampov district officials yesterday warned people living along the Mekong river and Bassa river to be cautious.

“Please, people living along the rivers be careful,” District Governor Cheng Monira said. “Find a safe place and communicate with your local authorities.”

As of Saturday, 60-metres of river bank collapsed in Prek Tasek commune following an increase of water levels.

Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng ordered officials to fix the collapsed river bank by using stones as a temporary preventive measure.
