Military police in Banteay Meanchey province’s Preah Neth Preah district on Sunday confiscated endangered animals from two men suspected of poaching wildlife in Thailand.

District military police Commander Sin Rasy said yesterday that authorities managed to stop an SUV transporting endangered wildlife.

He noted that the suspects attempted to evade authorities at a checkpoint on National Road 6 after they successfully evaded an initial roadblock at the border in Poipet city.

“Our forces pursued the SUV from the Thai border after it evaded our checkpoint and tried to hit our officers,” he said. “We set up another roadblock on National Road 6 in Preah Neth Preah to stop their advance. The two suspects attempted to flee on foot, but they were arrested.”

He identified the suspects as 28-year-old Pan Phareak and his assistant, 39-year-old Yarn Yeng, both from Siem Reap province.

“They were heading to Siem Reap. We’re not sure which corridor they used to cross into Cambodia,” he said. “But we know they came from Thailand and that Poipet city authorities began chasing them there.”

He added that authorities managed to confiscate three types of wild animals, including 197 hard-shelled turtles, ten soft-shelled turtles and 17 monitor lizards.

“They were sent to the provincial military police headquarters immediately,” he noted. “We found the animals in some water and some of them had died. The turtles survived, while some of the lizards died.”

Lak Thy, a provincial military police officer, said the suspects are now being questioned and authorities are contemplating filing charges or issuing a fine.

“We need to wait for the decision,” Mr Thy said.
