More than 3,000 hectares of paddy fields have been destroyed and 20,000 damaged by recent floods in the provinces of Stung Treng, Kratie, Kampong Cham, and Tbong Khmom, according to a preliminary report from the Ministry of Agriculture.

The assessment of the damage caused by the floods is ongoing, the ministry said, hinting at much larger figures in the final report.

“We are still collecting information regarding the extent of the damage. Our teams of inspectors all over the country are working hard to assess the situation,” Hean Vanhan, director the General Directorate of Agriculture, said.

Last month, the ministry dispatched teams of inspectors to evaluate the damage caused by flooding in agricultural land across the nation.

The ministry said yesterday it is now distributing seeds to farmers whose fields have been affected.

“We are helping districts and provinces that have been flooded but we cannot yet confirm the amount of seeds that have been distributed so far,” Mr Vanhan said.

“Some areas have been affected worse than others. We are trying to send seeds to farmers in the worst hit areas so that they can begin to cultivate again,” Mr Vanhan said.

Last month, Mr Vanhan said he expected the damage caused by the floods to be “minimal”.
