Floods in Stung Treng province’s Sesan district yesterday morning affected the lives of more than 800 families, after the water level in the Mekong river rose past the danger level of 10.7 meters.

District governor Phan Yut said yesterday that the floods affected the families living near the Lower Sesan II Hydropower dam in the district’s Talat commune.

“Due to more rain, flood waters from Laos filled the Mekong river and hit Stung Treang again,” he said.

The Water Resources and Meteorology Ministry announced yesterday that water levels in the Mekong river is rising due to the effects of tropical storm Bebinca.

It said that the level of the Mekong in Stung Treng has risen to 11 meters which is above the danger level of 10.7 meters.

The ministry statement said that the water level of the Mekong in Kratie province is at 22.11 meters which is above the danger level of 22 meters and in Kampong Cham province it is at 15.3 meters which is more than the danger level of 15.2 meters.

The statement also said that the flood in Sangke river in Battambang province has receded with the water level in the Mekong river falling to 12.26 meters which is below the danger level of 13.75 meters.

“If it doesn’t rain again, the water will recede more,” the statement said.

Battambang province governor Ngoun Ratanak led hundreds of officials to help villagers to collect their rice crops due to the flood in Ek Phnom district’s Prek Luong commune.
