Authorities in Banteay Meanchey province yesterday said that recent rainfall has caused flooding along National Road 58 in Svay Chek district.

The floods have led to a 70-metre stretch of the road in the district’s Svay Chek commune to be off-limits since it is under 0.15 to 0.20 metres of water.

Commune chief Pok Lon yesterday said that authorities are using excavators to deepen the roadside for the water to flow away from the road.

“The flood has hit some areas in Banteay Meanchey province,” he said. “But authorities are using excavators to reduce it and the situation is better now.”

Last week, the Water Resources and Meteorology Ministry warned that Cambodia will be affected by typhoons Mungkhut and Barijat up to Wednesday.

The ministry said yesterday that water levels in the Mekong river in Stung Treng and Kampong Cham provinces are still below the danger level.

It said the level in Stung Treng is at 9.42 meters which is lower than the danger level of 10.70meters. It added that the level in Kampong Cham is at 14.70 meters which is lower than the danger mark of 15.20 meters.

The ministry also noted that the water level in the Mekong in Kratie province is at 20.48 meters, which is below the danger level of 22 meters.

The NCDM reported last week that during first eight months of this year, 138 people have died in natural disasters, including 44 from floods which also displaced more than 50,000 people.
