City Hall is considering expanding city bus routes from eight to a total of 13, a spokesman said on Thursday.

Spokesman Met Meas Pheakdey said officials are conducting a study and mapping potential routes for the additional bus routes.

“We currently operate eight routes. Now, we are considering expanding the amount of routes our buses will cover,” Mr Meas Pheakdey said. “We are now conducting a study, and we will seek approval and wait for a final decision.”

“We don’t know yet when the plan can be implemented,” he added. “We need to have the buses first as well.”

The Phnom Penh Autonomous Bus Transportation authority said on Wednesday that the five additional routes will commence operation at the beginning of October.

It said that the buses will come from the Japanese government.

It added that the new routes will include: Borey Santepheap 2 in Por Senchey district to the Phnom Penh Economic Zone; the second from Century Market to the Boeng Chhouk bus stop; the third from Sleng Pagoda to the Stung Meanchey bus stop; the fourth from the Royal Railway station to Pasteur avenue; and the fifth from the Kouch Kanong roundabout in Sras Chork commune to the Phsar Doeum Thkov roudabout.

San Chey, Affiliated Network for Social Accountability executive director, said he welcomed the move and urged street vendors to avoid selling their goods along public roads.

“I can see there has been an increase in customer satisfaction with how reasonably priced the fares are,” Mr Chey said. “In order to make the routes optimal, street vendors should refrain from selling near where the buses stop.”

He noted that traffic jams still occur during rush hour and that traffic police must regulate the flow of traffic.

Last month, the City Hall said Japan offered 40 buses to the city. There are currently 190 buses operating throughout Phnom Penh.
