Following a complaint filed by Pu Chrey communities in Sre Pok Wildlife Sanctuary in Mondulkiri province, the provincial environment department has taken action against a company clearing parts of the protected land.
In the complaint, villagers said the Heang Ly Company began using an excavator to clear the community’s protected forest. They added that the land clearing in Pich Chreada district’s Pu Chrey commune was ordered by a man only known as Chhai Ly.
“Officials in charge of Sre Pok Wildlife Sanctuary and the Pu Chrey community took action against Heang Ly Company,” said Keo Sopheak, provincial environment department director. “The company promised to suspend their land clearance until it has been granted permission by the Mines Ministry and the Environment Ministry.”
“Sre Pok Wildlife Sanctuary officials stopped the construction of a road leading to a construction site,” he added. “Our ministry will cooperate with local authorities to solve this issue for the community.”
However, a Pu Chrey community member who declined to be named, said yesterday that Heang Ly continued to clear portions of the forest shortly after provincial officials made them sign a contract to halt the work.
Pu Chrey is one of nine communities tasked to protect forests by the Environment Ministry.
Representatives of the Heang Ly Company could not be reached for comment yesterday.
