Cambodia vows to fight illegal wildlife trade

Cambodia vowed to combat illegal wildlife trade and prepared to cooperate with UN members to conserve natural resources, environment minister Say Samal said yesterday.

The commitment was made yesterday when Mr Samal spoke at the illegal wildlife trade awareness-raising event at the residence of British Ambassador to Cambodia in Phnom Penh.

The British Embassy in Phnom Penh hosted the event to raise awareness of Illegal Wildlife Trade and to highlight the UK’s effort and Cambodian commitment in tackling the issue, according to the British Embassy’s statement.

The event was participated by British Ambassador Tina Redshaw, UK Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy Ed Vaizey, Mr Samal, representatives from Ministries of Interior and Agriculture as well as NGOs.

“Cambodia is committed to combating illegal wildlife trade. Cambodia is ready to cooperate with all countries to conserve natural resources and fight wildlife trade,” Mr Samal said.

He said that the environment ministry has sufficient rangers to fight illegal wildlife trade.
