The government is creating two more wildlife sanctuaries, totalling more than 60,000 hectares, in Kratie province to further preserve natural resources, mitigate climate change and reduce the risk of natural disasters.

According to two government sub-decrees issued on Friday, it is establishing the Sambor Wildlife Sanctuary, with a total area of 50,093 hectares in Sambor district, and Preaek Prasab Wildlife Sanctuary, with 12,770 hectares straddling Sambor and Prek Prasab districts.

The land area does not include privately-owned land or land set aside for public projects.

“The Ministry of Environment has the authority to organise and manage these two wildlife sanctuaries, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, relevant ministries and institutions, Kratie provincial administration and forces to ensure environmental protection, conservation of the ecology, biodiversity and the use of sustainable natural resources,” the sub-decree said.

Neth Pheaktra, an Environment Ministry secretary of state, said yesterday that the establishment of the sanctuaries, along with other protected areas and biodiversity conservation corridors, is to protect ecosystems.

He noted that they will also maintain environmental equilibrium by protecting and conserving natural resources and mitigating climate change and natural disaster risks.

“Another aim is to encourage the participation of local communities and stakeholders to protect, conserve, preserve and use natural resources sustainably,” Mr Pheaktra said.

He noted that to date there are 52 protected areas and three biodiversity conservation corridors totalling 7,239,920 hectares in Cambodia.

Neang Sokhon, a Phnom Penh resident, expressed support for the initiative.

“I support the establishment of many wildlife sanctuaries in Cambodia’s forests and mountains, for the sake of future generations,” he said.
