The Ministry of Tourism on Monday announced the establishment of five professional working teams to strengthen the management and development of the tourism industry in Preah Sihanouk province.

The working teams are tasked with providing input on how to make the coastal province more attractive to tourists and must also look into improving the quality of services.

One team is tasked with promoting a cleaner environment and another with strengthening tourism industry management.

A third working team will strengthen coastal management while the remaining two will be responsible for providing training for those in the tourism service sector and restructuring the management of the Preah Sihanouk provincial tourism department.

Minister of Tourism Thong Khon on Monday announced the creation of the teams during a meeting at a hotel in the province and said that their roles include looking into beautifying buildings and tourist spots and ensuring proper signage at businesses.

“All signboards at business premises must have larger Khmer letters on the top and the English language below them,” he said. “Below the English language they can use other languages such as Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, or Thai, but these have to smaller than the Khmer wording.”

Mr Khon also instructed the working teams to work with business owners and update them on policy development, legal procedures, legal documents, and other activities related to their industry.

He noted that the Preah Sihanouk provincial administration has to encourage the formation of hotel, restaurant and tourism industry associations to make it easy to manage and strengthen services and effective law enforcement.

“The government and Tourism Ministry will strive to make this an important tourist destination with quality services and food safety,” he said.

Preah Sihanouk Governor Yun Min said officials will implement the ministry’s recommendations.

“Residents and business owners please cooperate in implementing the procedures, legal documents and any orders in doing business in order to jointly develop Preah Sihanouk province to be more attractive,” he said.

Soch Sony, a Battambang province resident who regularly visits Preah Sihanouk, supported the working teams.

“The tourism sector needs to focus on clean resorts and good services so tourists will be interested and want to come again and again,” she said.
