Police gather the illegal products. Fresh News

Authorities in Kampong Speu province on Saturday raided a house and seized about 100 kilograms of illegal bushmeat in Phnom Sruoch district.

National Military Police spokesman Brigadier General Eng Hy said the raid in Ou commune was conducted following a warrant issued by the provincial court and was carried out by provincial forestry department officials led by a court prosecutor and working with police.

“The authorities raided the house along the National Road 4 and they found evidence as described by the Kampong Speu provincial court,” he said, identifying the house owner as Prak Sophors, 33.

Brig Gen Hy said authorities seized two large turtles, 15 Asian soft-shell turtles, a python, 16 kilograms of wild boar meat, 6.5 kilograms of mousedeer meat, four dead civets and 14 pairs of dried bear nails.

He said the live animals were handed over to the forestry administration for them to release into the wild while the bushmeat was burned.

Provincial court spokesman Ou Phat could not be reached for comment.

Bou Thy, commune deputy police chief who took part in the operation, said that the location had been secretly selling bushmeat for a long time.

“The house that was raided secretly sold bushmeat for years,” he said. “The owner put up a signboard saying that he is selling herbal medicine but those who knew his real business came to buy the bushmeat.”

He said that the place was raided several times, but the owner continued selling bushmeat.

Mr Thy added that according to the law, the owner will be allowed to continue to operate his herbal medicine business after he signs an undertaking not to sell bushmeat any more and pays a fine three times the value of the seized bushmeat.
