Military Police in Kampong Speu province’s Phnom Sruoch district on Saturday seized nearly 90kg of wild meat during a raid led by a provincial court prosecutor and Forestry Administration officials in Ou commune’s Cheak village.

District Military Police chief Yuk Dy said authorities also found live wild animals and have since set them free in the forest.

“The case is now in the hands of Forestry Administration officials,” he said, referring a reporter to the Forestry Administration for more details.

Phnom Sruoch district’s deputy head of Forestry Administration could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

According to the National Military Police news website, the house that stored and sold wildlife belonged to Prak Sopheas, 33, from Ou commune.

Authorities found evidence including: two live turtles weighing 17kg; 15 Asian soft-shelled turtles weighing 26.8kg; four unspecified turtles weighing 20kg; one live python weighing 10.5kg; 16kg of wild boar meat; 6.5kg of red muntjac meat, four dead civets weighing 8.5kg; and 14 pairs of bears’ nails.

The report said numerous wildlife traps were destroyed after the bust.

In a separate case, Svay Rieng provincial authorities on Wednesday detained two traders near Snay Krea village in Svay Chrum district’s Thlok commune.

Police confiscated 24 cages containing 528 lesser whistling ducks intended for transportation into Vietnam. The offenders were fined nearly $4,000 before being released.
