Forest activists face ‘incitement’ probe

A senior rights group official and eight ethnic community members were questioned by a Ratanakkiri provincial court prosecutor on Tuesday over alleged incitement to forestry crimes.

According to the court report, Pen Bunna, the senior land and natural resources investigator for rights group Adhoc, and the eight villagers were accused by authorities of inciting people to clear forest land at a sanctuary in Lumphat district’s Seda commune. Continue reading


Ministry warns of coming drought

The Water Resources and Meteorology Ministry is calling on all Cambodians to conserve water due to fear of drought during next year’s dry season.

The dry season is expected to commence in February and it will end in May.

On Monday, the ministry said in a statement that January temperatures will range from 17 to 28 degrees Celsius, especially in mountainous areas. Continue reading

Kampong Chhnang court put two land grabbers in detention

The Kampong Chhnang provincial court on Saturday ordered the detention of two suspects charged with illegal forest clearing in Rolea Ba’ier district, said the deputy provincial prosecutor Long Sitha.

“The investigating judge ordered them to be detained. I do not remember which article of the law, but it concerned the preservation of forest land,” Sitha said. Continue reading

Plant halts production amid complaints

Preah Sihanouk governor orders firm to end activities in national park

Preah Sihanouk provincial governor Yun Min has ordered a local company to cease all development in the Prek Koh Khyong area within the Ream National Park, which the firm plans to turn into a tourist attraction.

Citing environmental concerns in a letter issued on Monday, Min ordered HTTH Island Investment to stop building a jetty and a gravel road leading to the Prek Koh Khyong beach in Prey Nop district’s O’Chrov commune. Continue reading
