Kampot provincial authorities and the Forestry Administration will ask for an urgent court order to arrest a villager for clearing land at Dangkov mountain in La’ang commune’s Damnak Ampil village, Dang Tong district, after discovering the fact on Tuesday.

Dang Tong district governor Siv Pheng, who put a stop to the land clearance with a joint task force of provincial Forestry Administration officials, identified the suspect as Sah Vanna of Damnak Ampil village. Continue reading

Calls for mangrove protection

Mangroves and wetland areas in four coastal provinces are being illegally cleared and filled in order to grab land and build homes for private ownership, said a letter from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries dated November 19.

Its minister, Veng Sakhon sent the letter to authorities in Kep, Kampot, Preah Sihanouk and Koh Kong provinces, requesting action to ensure the areas’ preservation. Continue reading

The Environment Ministry yesterday warned that it will crack down and take legal action against those who illegally log or grab land in areas which are protected or designated for investment projects.

Four new areas to receive protected status

The Kampot Provincial Hall has granted the environment department’s request to register several scenic mountains in the coastal province as protected sites.

Home to abundant natural resources and biodiversity, the listing of Phnom Kampong Trach, Phnom Chhngouk, Phnom Kbal Romeas and Phnom La’ang as protected cultural and historical sites would be of great benefit to the local communities and environment, said Kampot provincial governor Cheav Tay. Three boats carrying three containers with 53 pieces of luxury wood allegedly intended for export to Vietnam were confiscated by the Customs Navigation Office in Kampot province’s Prek Thnout commune on Tuesday, Kampot Military deputy police chief Keo Sophal said.

Sophal said he was unaware of the total weight and measurements of the wood as he was not involved in the operation. He said the raid was carried out by the national Military Police in cooperation with the Customs Navigation Office. Continue reading
