The Kampong Chhnang provincial court on Saturday ordered the detention of two suspects charged with illegal forest clearing in Rolea Ba’ier district, said the deputy provincial prosecutor Long Sitha.

“The investigating judge ordered them to be detained. I do not remember which article of the law, but it concerned the preservation of forest land,” Sitha said. Continue reading

The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has published three documents in preparation for a review next month on the situation in Cambodia.

The UNHRC is set to review the human rights situation in the Kingdom on January 30 during the 32nd Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which is to be held from January 21 to February 1.

At least two people were found dead and four others wounded on Wednesday in the aftermath of a fire that tore through a rice factory owned by Golden Rice in Kampong Speu province’s Ksem Ksan commune in Odong district, provincial acting police chief Bun Chantha said.

It was not the first time a fire had engulfed the factory. A similar incident happened last year, but there were no casualties. Continue reading

Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong joined five regional counterparts at the 4th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Laos on Sunday and Monday, a meeting in which 19 Cambodian projects were approved with a budget of $8 million.

Preah Sihanouk provincial governor Yun Min has ordered a local company to cease all development in the Prek Koh Khyong area within the Ream National Park, which the firm plans to turn into a tourist attraction.

Citing environmental concerns in a letter issued on Monday, Min ordered HTTH Island Investment to stop building a jetty and a gravel road leading to the Prek Koh Khyong beach in Prey Nop district’s O’Chrov commune. Continue reading

Environmental rangers on Monday seized a pile of timber hidden in the forest behind a house in Pou Chrei commune’s Me Pai village in Mondulkiri province’s Pech Chreada district following reports from villagers.

Provincial Department of Environment director Keo Sopheak told The Post on Tuesday that a group of villagers on Sunday afternoon reported a pile of timber behind their neighbour’s house to Srepok Wildlife Sanctuary rangers, but that they did not know who hid it there and for what purpose.
