Preah Vihear provincial court is taking action against three suspects for illegal forest clearing in Prey Lang and Boeung Per Wildlife Sanctuaries and death threats following a complaint from a team of park rangers and the Prey Lang Community Network (PLCN) on Tuesday, according to Preah Vihear provincial prosecutor spokesperson Phy Sithorng. Kampong Thom authority impounds timber

A large haul of timber believed to have been illegally logged from the Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary in Kampong Thom province has been impounded after being discovered by authorities after a tip-off by local media.

Some 114 large logs were discovered in Kampong Thom’s Santuk district by local authorities on Tuesday afternoon. Continue reading

Hun Sen defends heritage site evictions

Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday defended the government’s stance on the eviction of people illegally living in heritage sites.

The statement was made during the 25th anniversary of the International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Heritage Site of Angkor in Siem Reap province.

Mr Hun Sen said the government’s stance on heritage site encroachment is often taken advantage of by political parties who accuse it of violating human rights. Continue reading

Mobile app tracks forest crimes

The Prey Lang Community Network (PLCN) has recorded 2,926 cases of forestry crimes in four provinces since February 2015, a report it released on Thursday said. It was based on data collected with a novel smartphone app.

PLCN members – an alliance of local communities living around the forest in northern Cambodia – have patrolled Prey Lang since 2001 to document cases of illegal logging. But poor data management made reporting haphazard. Continue reading
